Because I’m a guy (or maybe because I’m lazy?) I have never, ever, ever straightened, curled, heat-treated, blow-dried, dyed, or done anything else of the sort to my hair. Because my skin is extremely sensitive to chemicals, I gave up normal soap and shampoo a long time ago. The harshest thing to ever touch this hair has been the occasional tiny dose of pure castille soap. Otherwise, I use pure baking soda or just an extremely thorough rinsing. My hair adapted (over a very awkward three month period) to the more natural “no-shampoo” system and I really only even need to use the tiny dab of pure castille soap once a week these days to keep it looking extremely healthy. My hair looks healthy and natural because I only take care of it in healthy and natural ways.
My hair also looks extremely healthy because I am an extremely healthy person in general. For the last three years I have eaten tons of green vegetables alongside plenty of wild-caught salmon and organic, grass-fed beef. I have avoided sugar and drugs as if they were poisons. I exercise and also spend plenty of time working with my hands outside. I do this because a couple of older people I deeply care about have cancer and I became deeply health-conscious as a consequence. I offered them my hair but they felt like it would be awkward to wear the hair of someone they knew. I also thought about donating it to Locks of Love but some bad publicity made me think I could do more good by selling my hair to someone who would cherish it. I intend to use the money to support the people in my life who have cancer and their families.
This hair tells a story of a young man learning to grow into and become an extremely healthy person – physically, mentally, and emotionally. This hair has been with me to the tops of the German Alps, to the volcanic, oceanside cliffs of the Azores, and through the mountains of Tennessee. Now that I’m 28, I’m entering a more professional phase of my life and the time is right for a more professional-looking haircut. I want whoever buys this hair to know that it belonged to an adventurer, an explorer, and someone who made it through some incredibly tough trials. I’ve hiked the entire Appalachian Trail and I have made it through (with a lot of support) many emotional trials concerning the struggle to find joy, the the fear of death and the fear of losing the people I love. The guiding quote of my life, especially since I started growing my hair out, has been “The secret to happiness is freedom, and the secret to freedom is courage”. I want whoever wears this hair to feel a sense of courage and freedom as you face whatever is before you. I would like to pass on a sense of the same victories that I eventually found.
The following is in case someone needs reassurances about how I don’t use shampoo. I know it sounds gross to some people, but I am constantly assured I made the right move by the amount of compliments I get on my hair. I usually hear something like, “Oh my gosh, your hair is GORGEOUS! What product do you use??? I spend hours working on my hair and I can’t get it to look like that!” When they learn that I adapted my hair to no shampoo and that I typically only wash it with water, and if not then only baking soda or the tiniest bit of castille soap, they can hardly believe it. I can see them thinking about the hundreds of hours and dollars they spent trying to get their hair to look healthy and natural and realizing that the best solution was… to let the hair adjust to doing practically nothing???
To me the logic was simple though: how could putting anything on my hair that made my skin erupt in terrible acne actually be good for my hair? Besides, the more I think about how the people in my life must have aquired cancer in the first place, the more suspicious I have become of all sorts of chemicals. Rest-assured: you won’t find anything unhealthy OR anything gross/unhygienic in this hair! I am very proud of that
