10 natural hair growth tips

| Hair & Beauty | July 4, 2011

We’ve put together 10 of our favourite natural hair growth tips that have stood the test of time and that should help you on your way to grow longer luscious locks:

1. Protein

Did you know our hair is around 90% protein? It is made from a protein called keratin. These essential proteins get stripped away by heat styling, weather, pollution, and chemical damage. Therefore, it is essential that these lost nutrients get replaced. Protein will give the shaft of your hair more strength, will reduce the chances of damage and also accelerate growth.

Protein rich foods include eggs, fish, beans, yoghurt & poultry. You could also give low carb protein shakes a try – they’re not reserved for body builders!

2.  Henna

Henna is normally used as a natural hair colour but it is also used as natural hair conditioner, aiding hair growth. Try mixing it with egg, yoghurt and lemon juice so that it forms a paste. You’ll then need to work it into your hair and leave for an hour before washing. Be warned though, henna may give your hair red colour undertones!

3. Vitamin E

Vitamin E is known to improve blood circulation, therefore making the scalp healthier and speeding up growth. Vitamin E rich foods include spinach, vegetable oil, lentils, tomatoes, fortified cereals and whole grains.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar

Applying this to the scalp gets rid of any dead skin cells and bacteria in your hair follicles that may be blocking healthy hair growth. Mix half a cup with a quarter cup of water and use as a final rinse after shampooing. It doesn’t smell the best but it does wonders for your hair!

5. Flaxseed Oil

Flaxseed oil contains essential fatty acids which are not produced naturally by the human body. These are essential for a healthy scalp. It nourishes the hair follicle both internally and externally leaving it with a lovely sheen. Low levels of this omega 3 acid can cause dry and brittle hair so it’s always best to keep your levels topped up.

6. Olive Oil

Olive oil helps to reduce the production of DTH hormones, known to cause hair loss. The oxidants in olive oil also help promote a healthier scalp. Mix olive oil with coconut, sesame or castor oil and massage into your scalp. Leave your hair wrapped in a towel or shower cap for an hour before rinsing

7. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera contains aloenin which stimulates hair growth.  It also helps to balance PH levels, thereby preventing hair loss. Leave aloe vera gel on your scalp for 20-30 mins, giving it enough time to penetrate your skin before washing off.

8. Egg Yolk

Eggs act as a conditioner and are great for those with dry and brittle hair. Not only is it a cheap way to strengthen and moisturise the hair, the yolks are high in sulphur so it helps to reduce dandruff. Mix 2/3 yolks with castor oil and work it into your hair and scalp. Leave for 30 mins and rinse off.

9. Brush hair before sleeping

It’s an old wives tale that brushing your hair 100 times before you go to sleep helps it grow faster. Well there is some truth in this as brushing has been seen to produce stimulating effects. Combing also helps remove any dirt and transfer hair oils to the hair tips where they’re often needed.

10. Horsetail

Horesetail is rich in silica which helps to strengthen hair as well as keeping it smooth and shiny. The silica also supports amino acids that build protein in hair. Horsetail is usually sold as a powder in capsules. But be careful when it comes to dosage as it contains traces of nicotine! Women who are nursing or breastfeeding should not take this. It’s also good practice to seek medical advice before taking any supplements.
